CRYPTID CREATURE CASE FILE: Mermaids / Sirens π§ββοΈ
Origin: Found in folklore and mythology across many cultures worldwide, with origins in ancient Greek, Roman, and Middle Eastern traditions
Characteristics: Mermaids are mythical aquatic creatures with the upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. They are often depicted as beautiful and benevolent, living in underwater kingdoms. Sirens, on the other hand, originate from Greek mythology as dangerous half-bird, half-woman creatures who lured sailors to their death with their enchanting songs. Over time, the siren and mermaid myths blended, and sirens were often depicted as a more malevolent version of the mermaid, using their beautiful voices to shipwreck sailors.
Fun Fact: One of the earliest mermaid-like figures is the goddess Atargatis of ancient Assyria, who was depicted as having a human top and a fish tail. Christopher Columbus claimed to have seen three mermaids on his first voyage to the Americas in 1493, though he noted they were βnot so beautiful as they are painted.
